What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a one-to-one learning activity which can be highly effective at accelerating the development of an individual’s professional knowledge and skill. It utilises the support of someone who has experience and expertise in their role who is motivated to share their expertise in the development of others.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a process by which the coach and coachee work together through a range of situations/issues they may face in the workplace and build personal resilience. It is also about Coaching is a process by which the coach and coachee work together through a range of situations/issues they may face in the workplace and build personal resilience. It is also about helping the coachee to reflect on the situation and pull on their own resources to perhaps think differently about a situation.

Who can be a mentor or coach?

Anyone can be a mentor or coach. If you are working in a research related role; even if you have only been in a role for a short time, it is likely you will have picked up knowledge and skills that will be of value to someone. You do not need special training or formal development to be a mentor, all you need is the desire to help others and some time to do it. As a coach it is likely that you will have formal training and experience in using coaching skills.

Using the Research Mentor & Coach Directory

Registering as a mentor, coach or client

Registering in the directory is quick and easy, either as a mentor, coach or client. Simply create a profile with your email address and include a brief background and summary of the topics you would either like support in, or would like to support someone else.
